Ruamjai-kuoro Jyväskylästä saapuu kesän 2021 parhaille festareille! Mukana WAAW Africa-festareilla ovat myös uusi taiteellinen johtajamme Jaime Belmonte sekä kuoromestarimme Riku Miettunen.Ruamjain tavoite on löytää musiikkiinsa vaikutteita muinaisista musiikkiperinteistä,joiden sävelkieli resonoi vielä tänäkin päivänä.Kaksikymmenvuotisjuhliaan vastikään viettäneen kuoron ohjelmisto koostuu monienmaiden kansanmusiikista, Pohjoismaista Afrikan mantereelle.Ruamjai on noin kolmenkymmenen nuoren laulajan sekakuoro. Ruamjai tunnetaanerityisesti elävästä esiintymisestä sekä perinteisen kuoromusiikin rajojenrikkomisesta.Sana ruamjai tarkoittaa thain kielellä yhteistä sydäntä. Yhdessä tekemällä musiikistakasvaa enemmän kuin osiensa summa – Ruamjai sykkii ja soi isommin kuinyhteenlasketut laulajansa.

Ruamjai choir from Jyväskylä is returning to the best festivals of summer 2021! Accompanying us at the WAAW Africa Festival are our new amazing team members, our Artistic Director Jaime Belmonte and Choirmaster Riku Miettunen.The aim of Ruamjai is to find musical influences from ancient music traditions which can still be heard in the melodic language of our time.We have recently celebrated our twenty year old journey as a choir, which has filled our repertoire with music from all around the world, deeply rooting in folk music. Our music travels all the way from our neighboring Nordic countries to the continent of Africa.Ruamjai is a mixed choir of approximately thirty young vocalists. Ruamjai is especially known for its lively performances and breaking the bounds of traditional choir music.The word ’ruamjai’ comes from the Tai language, meaning ’shared heart’. Papa Zai & The Soul blenders
Papa Zai on sambialaissyntyinen, Suomessa pitkän ja merkittävän artistiuran tehnyt reggae, afro ja calypso/soca laulaja ja multi-instrumentalisti. Suomessa hänet tunnetaan parhaiten yhtyeiden kuten Soul Captain Band, the Love Culture Band, the Suhinators ja Fi-Reggae All Stars jäsenenä. Hän on esiintynyt maamme suurimmilla musiikkifestivaaleilla Provinssi Rockissa, Ruis Rockissa, Fest Afrikassa, Maailma Kylässä -festivaaleilla ja Reggae Snow Splashissa sekä Uppsala Reggae -festivaaleilla Ruotsissa. Hän on lisäksi vieraillut säännöllisesti eri Sound System -tapahtumissa kuten Selecta Andor’s Stompissa. Papa Zai on myös nostanut nuorempaa reggaesukupolvea, jamaikalaisia Burning Spearia, Sizzlaa ja Lucianoa tunnettuuteen.

Papa Zai is a Finland-based Zambian-born multi-talented reggae, afro and calypso/soca singer and multi-instrumentalist, performer and recording artist. In Finland he is probably best known for his stints with the Soul Captain Band, the Love Culture Band, the Suhinators and the Fi-Reggae All Stars. He has performed far and wide in Finland including in some of the major festivals like Ilosaari Rock, Provinssi Rock, Ruis Rock, Fest Afrika, Maailma Kylässä, Reggae Snow Splash, Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden, and many others. He has also been a regular feature at Selecta Andor’s Reggae Stomp and other Sound System events. Mama Africa Junior
Mama Africa Junior on ryhmä Suomessa vaikuttavia senegalilaisia ammattilaismuu­sikoita ja tanssijoita, joiden rytmikäs musiik­ki iskee suoraan suomalaisiin sydämiin ja lanteisiin. Ryhmän nimi viittaa siihen, että sen perustajajäsenet nuorina junioreina jät­tivät Dakarin hiekkaiset kadut levittääkseen afrikkalaisen musiikin ilosanomaa kylmään Pohjolaan.Tämä kuuden miehen riemukas pläjäys kuumaa afro-karibialaista tanssin huumaa koostuu seuraavista instrumenteista: kora (perinteinen länsi-afrikkalainen kielisoitin), basso, kitara, rumpusetti, congarummut, sabarrummut ja laulu.Musiikin ohella tarjoamme silmän ruuaksi upean länsi-afrikkalaisen sabartanssi shown.Sabar on perinteinen senegalilainen tanssi­laji, joka perustuu henkeäsalpaavan vaativiin hyppyihin ja perusaskeliin, joihin myös yleisö voi yhtyä. Ryhmä on esiintynyt aiemmin mm. Helsingin Faces Festivaaleilla, Jyväskylän Waaw Afri­ca Festivaaleilla, Tampereen Fest Afrikassa ja Trondheim World Music Festivaaleilla.

Mama Africa Junior is a group of Senegalese professional musicians and dancers active in Finland, whose rhythmic music strikes Finnish hearts and hips. The group’s name suggests that its founding members, as young juniors, left the sandy streets of Dakar to spread the good news of African music to the cold North. Later, the band has been influenced by their music from other parts of the world than Finland.These six men deliver a jubilant blast of hot Afro-Caribbean dance and rhythms. The music consists of the following instruments: kora (traditional West African string instrument), bass, guitar, drum set, conga drums, sabar drums and vocals.Along with the music, we also offer an eye-catching West African sabar-dance show. Sabar is a traditional Senegalese dance based on breathtakingly demanding jumps and basic steps that the audience can join.The group has previously appeared in e.g. Helsinki Faces Festival, Jyväskylä Waaw Africa Festival, Tampere Fest in Africa and Trondheim World Music Festival.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOtrV5M8eDc

The Shameless Shongololo Band (South Africa / Tanzania / Finland) shamelessness / traditional / afrobeat / funk / disco
The Shameless Shongololo Band on monikansallinen joukko yhteisellä kotimatkalla Afrikan mantereen eteläkärkeen. Shongololo-sana tulee xhosan ja zulun kielistä ja tarkoittaa tuhatjalkaista, tuota päättäväistä ja tyylikästä maantien kulkijaa. Yhtye soittaa eteläafrikkalais-suomalaisen laulaja-huilisti Ayla Brinkmannin juurien musiikkia. Innoittavista artisteista mainittakoon ainakin Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, Letta Mbulu ja Hugh Masekela. The Shameless Shongololo Bandin musiikissa elää vahvana eteläisen Afrikan townshippien soundimaailma, jota kuulee Pohjois-Euroopassa ani harvoin livenä.

The Shameless Shongololo Band is a group of musicians from Finland, South Africa and Tanzania on a common journey home to the African continent. The word shongololo comes from the Xhosa and Zulu languages and means a millipede, one of those unstoppable shiny long fellows who walk the earth with many many legs.Our music comes from the roots of Finnish-South African singer-flutist Ayla Brinkmann and is inspired by artists such as Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, Letta Mbulu and Hugh Masekela. This nine-man orchestra brings to life the unique sound of the townships of southern Africa, seldom heard live in Northern Europe.
